President, Indian Society for Assisted Reproduction

April 2017 – 2018

The much awaited day has finally arrived- the most important event of the year for the Indian Society for Assisted Reproduction (ISAR) ie. the Annual Conference of ISAR! It is here that the new President gets installed and the current one steps down after handing over the baton of responsibility for leading the Organization. It is the culmination of an entire year’s endeavours by teams consisting of hundreds of people constantly working to do their best for the Members of the Organization, for the Organization itself and for this magnificent Event.

The Annual Conference brings together Clinicians and Scientists to update their skills and knowledge in this galloping field of fertility treatment. The knowledge gained benefits millions of couples and brings smiles and tears of joy to their faces when they see their beautiful babies! We as a community of fertility experts do get immense satisfaction seeing this joy, especially after the struggle women have gone through, to get blessed with a child! The event also offers a platform to share their knowledge, to renew old friendships and make new ones.

Through the year, ISAR has also reached out to its members through Newsletters, Webinars, Travelling Seminars, Masterclasses, Conferences, Certificate Courses, Training Programs, Ethics Guidelines and the National Quiz! Not only its members, ISAR educates patients and this year has focused on “preventing infertility” through videos on You Tube.

I congratulate Drs. Gita, Gautam and their entire excellent team for this experience, which I know will be truly academic, heartwarming and culturally beautiful.

Wishing them all the best
With warm regards,
Duru Shah

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the Annual Conference of ISAR 2018, to be held in the land of rasgullas and mishti doi – Kolkata.

ISAR is a twenty six year old organization and its membership of committed fertility specialists now reaches 2500. ISAR has 18 state chapters spread across the country.

The field of fertility treatment is exciting and dynamic with newer advances and treatments constantly happening. This has created a lot of interest in young gynaecologists, many of whom are choosing to specialize in ART and practise exclusively in this field. With super specialty degrees now available in India and abroad, this has become an acceptable and feasible area of practice, either as a clinician or as an embryologist.

The Annual Conference of ISAR is a much awaited event. Bengal has always been known as the land of intellectuals and Kolkata has earned a reputation of hosting wonderful academic events. This conference too, promises to be academically excellent with the latest updates, the best of speakers from India and abroad and a lot of interaction and practical learning. The social programmes will give us an opportunity to rekindle old friendships and make new ones.

I wish the organizers of this mega event, Dr Gita Ganguly Mukherjee, Chairperson, Dr Gautam Khastgir, Secretary and their team all the very best. I am sure it will be a memorable event.

Dear ISARIANS,

Greetings and Regards.

It's indeed my great pleasure to extend a very warm welcome to all of you to the city of JOY for the Annual ISAR Congress in Kolkata in April 2018.

We look forward to fantastic academics and social binding in Kolkata.

ISAR has grown and now we can boast of 2500 members and our annual conferences are attracting over 2000 delegates every year.
See you all in Kolkata.

Dr Ameet Patki
Hon General Secretary ISAR

The annual ISAR Conference is a much awaited event in the ISAR fraternity. It is also the culmination of a years’ work done by the current office bearers of ISAR. The 23rd Annual ISAR 2018 at Kolkata promises to be not only an educational extravaganza but also a cultural and a gastronomic feast. ISAR Bengal has left no stone unturned and pulled out all plugs to ensure that the conference will set new bench marks and will be remembered for years to come.

This year in addition to the usual Pre Congress Workshops we have introduced Master Class from ASRM and ESHRE. We are also presenting a Live Journal club from the ASRM team direct from USA and discussion with the lead authors of interesting papers recently published. All these new additions are a means to update the delegates on newer technologies in ART.

ISAR this year has had Certificate courses and many members have availed of the opportunity to keep abreast of developments in the field. We would like to congratulate them and hence we have organized an ISAR Convocation to felicitate such members. Do join us for this and other Cultural events that Kolkata will showcase during the course of the conference.

I am sure the delegates will benefit immensely from this conference. Take this opportunity to renew old ties and forge new connections with delegates coming from across India and the neighboring countries.

I join the Organizing team in welcoming you all to the City of Joy- Kolkata.

Dear Colleagues,

Team ISAR 2018 is delighted to invite all Fertility experts around the world and all friends from the Pharmaceutical fraternity to the National Congress of ISAR which really is an International Conference on Assisted Reproduction to be held in Kolkata. We welcome you all to the city where Assisted Conception Treatment in India first started its journey in the vibrant capital of Bengal.

Kolkata was the first to witness the usage of HMG for ovarian stimulation in IVF, the first trans-vaginal approach for ovum pick-up, the first cryopreservation of human embryos, and the first transfer of an embryo in a subsequent untreated cycle. Professor Subhas Mukherjee, one of the pioneers of our fraternity, was the mastermind behind the birth of world's second and India's first test tube baby in Kolkata. Another pioneer of Infertility Treatment, Professor B N Chakravarty is also from this city and has the credit of delivering the third test tube baby in India. It was under his leadership that the 3rd Annual Conference of ISAR was held in Kolkata.

Kolkata is also proud of Dr Sunit Mukherjee, Senior Scientist and Cryobiologist, who was a close associate of Dr Subhas Mukherjee, as well as Dr Sudarsan Ghosh Dastidar who was an integral part of Dr B N Chakravarty’s team. Dr Ghosh Dastidar played an independent role in the development of laboratory and embryology aspects towards the birth of 3rd IVF baby in India.

We are privileged to host the 23rd Annual Conference of Indian Society of Assisted Reproduction with many exciting scientific events and cultural extravaganza. The conference will be held from 19th to 22nd April, 2018 at Science City, Kolkata. The organizing and scientific committee are committed to bring the best of its kind in this highest academic platform, lined up with focused sessions on basic science, endocrinology, clinical problems, embryology, andrology, endoscopic surgery, hands-on workshops and a multitude of master classes. We are devoted to stage the finest intermingling of science and arts in this new era of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART).

ART IN BENGAL

The Indian journey of ART began in Kolkata when Dr Subhas Mukherjee discovered the easiest and most successful way of producing a test tube baby. Sadly enough, his pioneering work never got the acclaim it deserved in his lifetime. Hardly a big deal! Since when has a genius been back-patted, especially if he happened to be an Indian, born light years ahead of his time? Although an unsung hero, Mukherjee’s path breaking achievements have been since replicated all over the world. Gokhale’s words “What Bengal thinks today India thinks tomorrow” has come true in so far as this son of Bengal’s feat is concerned. We feel proud that India’s first IVF baby Durga alias Kanupriya was felicitated by ISAR on her birthday in 2015 and the event was presided over by our past President Dr Hrishikesh Pai in Kolkata.

ISAR Bengal was established by Professor Baidyanath Chakravarty with the active support of Professor Gita Ganguly Mukherjee. Since its inception, various scientific meetings have been held to keep the flag flying high. Unbeknown to most of us, Kolkata has quietly but gradually turned into a national hub for in-vitro fertilisation. The rush is spurred by the comparatively lower cost and higher success rate. Infertility treatment in our city costs only a fifth of what it costs in the USA or the UK and at the same time offers high class service with state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities. Friends, Kolkata has always been the knowledge capital of India and a fertile ground for exchange of ideas, experiences and knowledge. Let us make the most of this excellent and advantageous platform of ISAR 2018 to learn from and work with each other towards making ART available to all those who need it.
